Yet imagine that space being super cramped, with every inch being utilized within a breath of its life. The ISS is about the size of an average 4-5 bedroom house when you think of volume. There is a lot of footage and a bunch of documentary films that have been shot on the ISS – (in fact do check out “The Wonderful to get a survey of the history of the ISS and the astronauts who make it live.) ‘The Challenge’ is the first fictional film shot in space, and the logistics would be head spinning.

Applicants were given tests of creativity and a serious medical and physical fitness screening before they settled on Peresild.īut what pressure to shoot your scenes in a space station with such a small crew. But I think that once we achieve the goal, all that will seem not so difficult and we will remember it with a smile.” Peresild, 35, has acted in 70 roles on screen, was chosen among 3000 applicants who auditioned to play the doctor. Peresild is quoted as saying : “It was psychologically, physically and morally hard…. It takes 2 years to train to be an astronaut at NASA and Pereslid and Shipenko did it in 4 months. True, these are better odds than having your film accepted by the Cannes Film Festival but still. In 2017 12,000 people applied to become a proper space cadet with only 12 being accepted into NASA’s training program. The difficulty of the training process alone is enough to turn anyone off the idea of filming anything in space. I have been intrigued by the idea of making a narrative film in space and can’t stop thinking about how difficult a task this must have been.

Never mind that in reality, since the ISS is about 400 kms from the Earth, and seriously injured occupants would more than likely be packed into the Soyuz spacecraft and shuttled back to land to get treatment in just a few hours. Not sure who plays the injured astronaut. The script is quite guarded but it has been reported the plot revolves around a surgeon who must rush to space to perform an operation on an astronaut who has been injured by debris hitting the space station. They were sent to shoot scenes for a film called ‘The Challenge’ on the International Space Station for 10 days. The film team was made up of actual Cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, actor Yulia Peresild and director Klim Shipenko. A Russian film crew landed back on Earth on October 17th after becoming the first to shoot scenes for a feature film… in space.
